Welcome,
A short newsletter this week. I've started putting together the next few weeks of the "Running as you age" series. Plus, I wish I could tell you I spent all weekend being productive, but that's not the case.
Speaking of the running as you age series, I am still very much looking for people so I can start it. The newsletter series interviews people and discusses how running has changed as they age. Maybe your training looks completely different...maybe your reasons for running are different than 20 years ago. Whatever the case is, I am still looking for people ages 60 and above. So if you are interested in sharing your story, please email me at fueledbylolz@gmail.com!
Personal life, what's going on? I ran my fastest 5k in a little while at the Corona Del Mar Scenic 5k. With 170 feet of elevation (that I only remembered when I got to the OC), I am surprised I ran a 20:30. I might be even more surprised I was second overall! My goal for the summer is to run under 20 minutes in the 5k, and I feel like after running a 20:30 on a hilly course, I *may* be closer than I think. BUT I also don't want to say that out loud.
Some highs from the week:
Getting out of the desert and heading to Orange County for the day. I've been thriving on taking day trips out of the desert at least once a week.
Running the 20:30 5k
Picking up ten new plants from someone moving and reorganizing the house so they fit
Some lows from the week:
Whew, work was busy and stressful, and I don't thrive on that. I definitely cannot add "works well under pressure" as a strong point.
Not sleeping well (probably from stress?)
Swimming in 30 mph winds. You could visibly see a current in the pool, LOL.
That's really about it.
What is the first Wednesday in June, you might ask?
It's Global Running Day!
Once called "National Running Day," Global Running Day began in the United States in 2009. The first year of "Global Running Day" was 2016, when 2.5 million people from over 170 countries pledged to run over 9 million miles! Since then, it has only grown with NYRR, Boston, Atlanta Track Club, and many more organizations creating huge events. In 2020, it went virtual due to COVID.
In 2020 and 2021, Global Running Day was virtual due to COVID. In 2023, it's now bigger than ever.
The 2021 event will also be virtually hosted globally by the New York Road Runners with a free virtual 1-mile event from June 1 to June 6. They also have a Strava challenge.
If You've never heard or participated: What is Global Running Day?
Easy: A day dedicated to running!
But for many runners, that is every day...
Global Running Day encourages people to run more and lead healthier and more active lifestyles. While the holiday is centered around running, you can walk, walk your dog, run with children, or do whatever feels right to you. You don't need to be a "marathon runner" to participate in global running day.
There are in-person events! You can find some here, but contact your local running store and see what they are doing.
If you are local to New Jersey, SJ RunningCo. of Haddonfield has a group run and a bunch of shoe giveaways. Call or follow your local running store to see what events are happening.
If you live in the middle of nowhere like me, consider doing a virtual event like the NYRR Virtual 5k.
