Welcome to the 52nd edition of the newsletter!
It's been one year since I started this newsletter. Truthfully, I didn't know how it would grow or even if it would grow, but here we are, one year later. I'm so grateful to everyone that has subscribed, shared, and helped it grow. Today we have about 1350 subscribers and I couldn't do any of this without you.
So thank you!
For the 52nd newsletter, I wanted to choose a topic that is important to me, and I decided on runner safety. I know the "shoe debate" and the Alpha Fly being legal is a big, hot topic right now, but truthfully, I'm all shoed out. I'll be back at a later point with that.
We all know safety is important. While it's the driver's responsibility to be aware of their surroundings, it's the runner's responsbility to be well lit and visible. With all the options available, there is no excuse not to wear something—anything—reflective. Don't run in all black, don't leave the house without a light. It's really that easy.
This newsletter is sponsored by Safety Skin and you can use the code FueledbyLOLZ to get 20% off your order.
Instead of "Why" be safe, I want to discuss "How" to Be Safe:
Let's take a look at some products I've found that aren't cumbersome or bulky, and you'll typically forget you're wearing them.
Products to Keep You Safe While Running:
These products are designed for vehicles and other people to see you. Staying safe is two-fold in running: you need to see and others need to see you. Here I'm focusing on "others seeing you."
The Minimalist:
You're the type of person who hates layers and sweats through everything. The less clothing, the better. Even the thought of wearing a reflective vest or extra layer makes you sweat.
I wrote a full review here. Safety Skin is applied directly to the skin. I've been using it for just over two years, especially in the summer. I apply to my legs and arms. It’s almost like painting your body with a breathable reflective coating. You can apply as much as you want, and it easily comes off in the shower.
As mentioned, I've had mine for 2 years and it doesn't show any signs of being retired. I assume it's like chapstick: I'll probably lose it before I use the entire bottle. Right now they are offering readers 20% off with the code FueledbyLOLZ. Less than $20 for a product that isn't bulky or "too heavy" to hold or layer.
Nathan Lights clip anywhere and everywhere. Whether you are walking your dog or out running, these minimalist lights can clip anywhere. Personally, I think it's better to have at least a couple so vehicles can see you at different angles.
If you want a minimal safety vest, this is it. It's lightweight, reflects light and gets the job done. Accordingly to Amiphod, it's 40% more reflective than similar vests. I've used it in the past and can tell you it doesn't annoy me or bounce, which is why I recommend it.
Clothing:
Brooks makes extremely light and reflective jackets. Since winter is (usually) cold, it makes sense that your outer layer is reflective. I've included these because I've used older models before and I think Brooks does an excellent job with them.
Many years ago (I'm talking when I lived in Texas in 2013), I ran for Oiselle. While I haven't tried their reflective gear, I know a lot of people swear by it. Oiselle clothing is functional, whether you need reflective gear or just need running apparel.
If you've read past newsletters, you know I'm a lover of the brand Gore. In the worst of worst conditions—pouring rain, snow, sleet, hail, darkness—Gore gets me through. I've included the jacket here because it's also extremely reflective.
Heavy Duty:
You cannot get more seen than this programmable vest. You can set the color you want, the flash speed, and everything else. You look like a running Christmas tree. If you start and finish your run in the dark, it's something I recommend considering. They aren't bulky, but they are bulkier than nearly everything else. I like them in the pitch black or for running in inclement weather because drivers can see you coming from quite a distance. Most local running stores carry them because they are the most reflective and most seen piece of gear you can have.
These days, staying safe is comfortable and not cumbersome. Gone are the days of heavy and bulky jackets, vests, and lights. It's as easy as rubbing a deodorant-like stick on your legs. So no excuses.

What is Keeping Me Entertained?
The Millrose Games: There was so much excitement from the 2020 Millrose games. One thing I appreciate is that, even with the shoe technology debate, running, track, and field is just getting faster and better.
Mondo set the Pole Vault World Record but essentially vaulting over a house.
Watch Elle Purrier smash the 1 mile US indoor record (4:16.85). The previous record was almost 38 years old.

Finally, nothing to do with running but a Flight from JFK to Heathrow (Boeing 747), reached a top speed of 825 miles per hour over the North Atlantic. It went from NYC to London with a flight time of four hours and 56 minutes. Storm Ciera created a 200 mph Jet Stream.
