Like to veer off topic briefly with two short subjects: First up "banking time". A local runner (who I have done a few training runs with) competed this spring in a flat marathon race. His goal seemed modest- run under 4:00. His best half is 1:32. With the idea of banking extra time he hits the halfway at 1:33. Can anyone guess what happened in second half? A slow death march of 2:28 giving him a 4:01:30 Excessive banking of time can be disastrous. Second subject: Seems many runners will not run any races where there are any hills to run. Pancake flat races only, wanting no challenges. At the 2020 Women's half marathon world championships the course had 304 feet of elevation gain. Still 3 runner's finished under the world record at this race. Always looking to race pancake flat races and avoiding any challenges doesn't seem like the way to improve one's racing.

From late 2018 through the middle of this year, with the exception of my first road marathon a year ago, I'd been focused exclusively on trails and ultras with increasing elevation. All my road PR's date back to 2018. Since June, I've been back on the road and seem to have picked up a bit of speed while running on mountains. I PR'd a half marathon by 3 minutes in mid-June. So, while training toward an October marathon (Adirondack), my immodest fall goal is to PR every distance from 5k through marathon. That's all.

Have a 5k and 25k in October, then likely a break in races till spring of 22. 5k goal improve race time. 25k age group record and place well. Fall- continue to improve on my 5k. Another goal is to cut back on total weekly mileage and long runs. Longest run from 28 to 17 miles. Be great physically and mentally to cut back on training during fall and upcoming winter. Weather changing already- currently 49 heading to high of 68 (65 high yesterday). Another benefit of less training will be shoes lasting longer.

No goals right now. I applied to be a pacer for the Richmond Half in November, and thinking about trying to squeeze another half in if I can find one.

Consistency. I need to be more consistent with running and not necessarily running at the same time if the day but with getting 25-35 miles per week. July hit those marks but August fell flat. Here’s to more consistency in September and through the rest of the year.
