Since we are all working out solo, I thought it would be fun to hear what other people’s favorite podcasts and songs are while working out. All of my favorite podcasts are here.
Plus, this week if you share the newsletter you’ll be entered to win a pair of Aftershokz Aeropex Headphones (and there aren’t a lot of entries right now so you have a good chance!)
OK, so I think I might be an outlier in that I listen to way more podcasts than I do music. For running related podcasts I love I'll Have Another with Lindsey Hein and The Morning Shakeout with Mario Fraioli. For non-running podcasts I enjoy a lot of the NPR affiliated ones like This American Life, The Moth and Hidden Brain.
And my random miniseries recommendation is for y'all to listen to a podcast called Dr. Death; it's wild.
Hollie, thanks for hosting these comment threads, it's a nice distraction and I look forward to finding some new podcast recommendations!
Oh a big thumbs up for The Moth. Short true stories about serious, sometimes life altering events, but sometime humorous too. Mostly as told by regular folks. There's a funny running-related one called Stranded by Meena Ziabari, I believe it can be found online and it's fantastic, worth your time if you're a runner.
Great topic! My favorites (in no particular order) are:
“How I Built This” with Guy Raz
“Armchair Expert” with Dax Shepard
“South Bound” with Tommy Tomlinson
“The Passion Economy” with Adam Davidson
You already have an excellent list of running-related podcasts, but probably my favorites are the “Another Mother Runner” podcast (even though I’m not a mother! — they do a great job) and “Ali on the Run.” Both are fantastic.
Oh and when I want something different, I've been working my way through Zombies Run. It's an interactive audio story, like a radio play, with your own music interleaved between story segments. The zombie apocalypse storyline hits a little too close to home right this minute, though.
I listen to Ari Melber, Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow, and Lawrence Donnell's MSNBC shows via podcast. When I've caught up with those, I listen to Josh Barro's two shows from KCRW and Ana Marie Cox's show. Plus a couple of Star Trek podcasts recapping and discussing the latest episodes.
I love some heavier music when I run. My current playlist is stuff like Every Time I Die, Memphis May Fire, Throwdown, Sky Eats Airplane, Thrice, and some others.
I usually listen to sci-fi, fantasy, or horror audio drama podcasts. The No Sleep Podcast, Knifepoint Horror, Magnus Archives, or Scott Sigler. Unfortunately these tend to come with trigger warnings even in normal times, so some may want to put these on your list for another time. However, I'm still going to recommend one: The Big Loop, by Paul Bae (Good IG story follow BTW).
As much as I enjoy country and bluegrass music, some of it's not always the best up-tempo running music, maybe go with some Eric Church or Dierks Bentley. I've mostly stuck with classic-to 90's rock bands, Neil Young, Foo Fighters, Weezer, Pearl Jam and Greenday. I can recommend a few current- millennium songs/artists for your playlists: The Dead Deads with Fresh Kicks or Super Tiny, Meresha with New Revolution, One Republic with Everybody Loves Me, Samantha Fish with Bulletproof. The recent Skillet album has some pretty good running songs, such as Legendary & You Ain't Ready (For Me), or their older song Feel Invincible is actually a really good run song.
I love the Work, Play Love Podcast and Rambling Runner. For non running podcasts - Clublife (Tiesto), Protocal Radio (Nicky Romaro), W&W are great electronic podcasts to wake me up for my early morning runs
I like 'off menu', a podcast where two British comedians invite special guests into their magical restaurant to each choose their favourite starter, main course, side dish, dessert and drink. I am not sure whether I find it so funny as I am British, but if you like food it is great. Also 'conversations with tyler' - great for when you feel like some learning!
Hands down is The Dan Patrick Show. They talk a lot of sports but they have a lot of fun and the “supporting cast” is like listening to my college buddies.
My routine is basically the same ... I am supposed to be ‘75% remote’ but this week it is more like ‘75% on-site’! On the upside it is because the stuff we do is feeding into testing & vaccine research
I also like to listen to Apple Music and their playlists. They have a lot of fun playlists.

Of course, I enjoy the threads too. I’ve found myself listening to a lot of new podcasts this way.
Apple Music all the way! My running playlist goes from Cash to New Order, and back to the Beastie Boys!! LOL!! 🏃🏼♂️🏃🏼♂️💙
I normally listen to classic rock, especially Tom Petty or Fleetwood Mac.
Love Fleetwood Mac!
Really? They are one of my all-time favorites!

My favorite thing to listen to wile running is the Running Life: A Fitness Protection Production podcast!
I haven’t heard of this, I’m going to have to listen, thanks!

Oh that’s pretty cool, I’m going to have to listen to it.

It's very NSFW but Do By Friday has become my absolute favorite.
Rich Roll, Mario Fraoli are some of my favorites!
The Catholic Guy Show
I love some heavier music when I run. My current playlist is stuff like Every Time I Die, Memphis May Fire, Throwdown, Sky Eats Airplane, Thrice, and some others.
On my easy runs, I usually have mixes of Jackson Brown, Indigo Girls, Dave Mathews Band etc
My favorite running podcasts are The Morning Shakeout, Clean Sport Collective, and On Coaching with Magness and Marcus.
I’ve really enjoyed Clean Sport Collective lately too.

Sports? with Katie Nolan is my jam. It tends to be a longer one, which I actually appreciate!
Rich roll podcast! I also like to use pandora - whatever music mood I’m in that day I search for that artist or genre station.
I used to listen to Pandora but I’ve really enjoyed Apple Music the last year for so.
South Beach Sessions with Dan LeBatard
KoopCast by Jason Koop
ESPN Daily with Mina Kimes
Billy Yang Podcast
I’ll Have Another; D3 Glory Days; Rambling Runner; Run Through It; Showrunners.
Armchair Expert is my jam!!!!!
Gymcastic (it's a gymnastics podcast) and Office Ladies are my favorites!
I love the Work, Play Love Podcast and Rambling Runner. For non running podcasts - Clublife (Tiesto), Protocal Radio (Nicky Romaro), W&W are great electronic podcasts to wake me up for my early morning runs

“Clerically Speaking” and “A Way With Words.”
Good ones! I love A Way With Words.
Love listening to the Morning Shakeout with Mario Fraioli.

Oh I’ll have to listen to that, thank you!
Since I always run outdoors and start pre-dawn except on weekends, I NEVER run with any sort of ‘attention diminishing’ distraction like music, etc.
Are you working from home now? Do you get to run later?
My routine is basically the same ... I am supposed to be ‘75% remote’ but this week it is more like ‘75% on-site’! On the upside it is because the stuff we do is feeding into testing & vaccine research
